I tried to conceive the individual letters as people
who wanted the same so called freedom of
others
but which was in actual fact just another
set of rules.
People were designing so
many
modular typefaces that it made me mad. The cut, copy & paste ethic of the Mac wasoften producing typefaces that were so unsympathetic to the
Roman framework that what they emulated,
seemed more akin in method to the gothicstyle of regulated textural
pen strokes thatpreceded the humanistic
trends of t
he Renaissance.

With the introduction of laser printers, the
"smooth"printing option was provided as a
shortcut to
increasing the resolution of
bitmaps from screen to printer. This was the
inspirationfor the
Citizen. Licko used straight linesegments to approximate the features of
smooth printing, applied to her earlier Lo-Res
Twelve bitmap design. Later, this progression
would develop into the Triplex Sans family.

This series of faces, like Council, began as a
font of capital letters in 1996 and was finished
in 1999. The Bold weight was the first to be
designed. Its inspiration came from a bright
chromolithographed letterhead designed
around the turn of the century for the
COLE BROTHERS traveling shows, an
extravaganza of acrobatic and circus acts that
included trained horses with bareback riders.
There is a quality of boldness and daring in
the letters that I think accurately reflects the
directness and bravado of circus performers. |

This text was first published in 1996 on
the front side of the promotional
poster for
Filosofia. The poster was titled
"It's Their Bodoni," and was designed by
Massimo Vignelli.Since then, there have
been many digital font revivals and
reworkings of Bodoni's typefaces, some of
which have brought to light the numerous
variations in Bodoni's type designs not evident
in the earlier photo types.

Ottomat started out as an experiment
with basic geometric shapes and how
these can be applied to a text face design.
Instead of focusing purely on achieving
ultimate legibility, or "neutrality," the
intent was to apply geometry in an
intuitive and spontaneous manner,
perhaps as seen in the geometric designs
created by American Indian tribes. |
